Budha - The Mercury

In Hinduism, Budha is the name of the planet, Mercury. He is considered to be the most intelligent of all the deities among Navagrahas.


Budha is said to be the son of Chandra and Rohini, according to Linga Purana. But in other puranas like Vishnu Purana, Brahma Purana, Vayu Purana, Harivansha Purana, Devi Bhagavatha, Bhagavatha Purana, and other holy scriptures, Budha was born as the result of seduction of Tara, who was Brihaspathi's wife, by Chandra. As Budha is the son of Chandra, he is also known as Saumya. Budha is said to spring from the rays of the lunar deity. But Budha is always in conflict with his father, Chandra. This is because he feels that Chandra seduced Tara, illegally by tricking her. Budha's wife is Ila, who is the daughter of Manu and they have a son called Pururava. Budha is lord of three nakshatras - Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, and Revati.


Budha is personified as a well-built, mild, eloquent, witty, and humorous deity who is green in color. He holds a sword with a curved blade and a lotus. He usually rides a carpet or an eagle or a chariot driven by lions. Budha is also known as Buddhi Karaka.


Astrologers state that the intelligence of a person depends on the strength of Budha in one's horoscope. Budha symbolises the thinking capacity, communication, learning, language, youth, childhood, friends, and sports. Even though Budha is said to initiate learning, he can also produce duality in one's mind by inducing conflictions. Budha is responsible for analytical and rational thinking. He is also known as the protector of merchants and traders. Budha can also bring lots of luck to sports people, artists, and actors/actresses.
