Surya - The Sun

Surya or the Sun is considered to be the most powerful of all the Navagrahas. It becomes easy to associate with him as he is seen every day.

In the Navagraha temple, the idol of Surya is usually located at the centre with the rest of the idols of the other eight deities around it. Surya is usually imagined or picturised as the radiant lord with golden and shining arms who is riding a chariot called Uchchaishrawa, that is pulled by seven white horses. Few of them interpret these seven horses as seven different colors of the white light and rest of them state that they represent the seven days of the week. The charioteer of Surya is Aruna, the brother of Garuda.

In Mahabharatha, Karna is also acknowledged as the son of Surya as he was born due to a mantra that was recited for Surya by Kunti.

According to the Hindu scriptures, Surya has two wives, Sanjana and Chaya. His sons are Manu, Shani, and Yama. He also has a daughter, Yamuna.

He is referred to by various names as follows:

  • Ravi
  • Aditya
  • Divakar
  • Pusha
  • Savita
  • Arka
  • Mitra
  • Bhanu
  • Grahapati

He is supposed to bestow health, success, and prosperity. He, most importantly, is the giver of life. He is the centre of the whole system and it is unimaginable to think of any existence without Surya. Hence he often referred to as the father or the soul of the entire system.

A combination of ten yogic postures called Surya Namaskara is dedicated to this solar deity. Twelve mantras for Surya are recited with each cycle of Surya Namaskar.

Aditya Hridayam is one of the popular shlokas on Surya. This was recited to Lord Rama by Sage Agastya during the battle with Ravana.

According to Vedic astrology, he is elevated in Mesha rashi and is at the bottom in Tula rashi. In one's horoscope, the position of Surya is said to be the strongest when he is directly overhead in the tenth house and on the angles i.e. the first, fourth, and the seventh houses. If Surya is in the leading position in one's horoscope, then that person is supposed to have leadership and authoritative qualities and may turn out be one of the important people in the society.

As per the Hindu calendar, Surya is the lord of nakshatras such as Kritika, Uttara Phalguni, and Uttara Ashadha. Based upon the movement of Surya from one nakshatra to another, festivals like Makara Sankranthi are celebrated.

The health points that are ruled by Surya are heart, blood circulation, eyes, head, hair growth, abdomen, digestion, and fever. Ayurveda classifies the constitution as Pitta.
